Industry Advantage:
The majority of total project cost savings is achieved during the early design stages of a project. The Router provides the means to quickly evaluate alternative arrangements, provide accurate MTO's and establish the most cost-effective design.
The Router considers multiple routes before selecting the optimized path. The Router's cost-driven logic substantially reduces piping quantities, field welds and pipe supports. Automatic batch sequencing of piping is based on size, material and temperature, so that the greatest savings are realized in large critical piping systems.
Equipment maintenance and removal space as well as valve accessibility is provided with MTO accuracy within 5%. Man-hour reductions of up to 30% are attainable with the Router, which provides the means to quickly evaluate alternative arrangements to provide the most cost-effective design. Once line input is created and the equipment has been modeled, piping will be automatically routed for any arrangement.
When Bechtel first utilized the Router in the power industry, they requested additional Router enhancements. First the software was required to route piping up the face of a boiler structure utilizing common support steel. This requirement was met with the introduction of the vertical pipe chase, which would later also be utilized inside buildings as well. Second the steam and critical piping had to maintain the appropriate slope requirements. This enhancement enables user to dictate slope ratio and direction.
ASD and Siemens recently did a model to compare service-piping quality and quantities compared to conventional design methods on a Combined Cycle Project. With critical and main piping already finalized in PDS, the Router had to contend with limited space availability. The end results were quality economical pipe routings similar to conventional design but in half the time and with reduced support costs.
Hitachi also utilizes the Router in nuclear applications where separation of radioactive systems is a design safety requirement. The Router automatically provides this separation as well as automatically evaluates the use of penetrations or chases for the routing of piping in heavily shielded compartments. The Router will automatically set centerlines of all piping within chases for common support.
Siemens also provided ASD with line and equipment data for generating a model for pre-fabricated equipment and piping skid for a planned outage on an existing nuclear facility.
A current industry direction is to utilize proven Standard or Modular Designs for equipment including complex piping manifolds. These modules may be imported from previous projects as simple blocks with appropriate interface points. This engineering "re-use" approach is compatible with the Router.
The Router is also capable of providing the industry need for the automatic design of field routed piping.

These features make the ASD Pipe Router the only piping design software suitable for the Power Industry.
Interfaces:
Seamless Integration with PDS, Plant Space and PDMS:
- Line lists from intelligent P&ID's and 3D equipment models can be directly imported into ASD.
- Routed piping is automatically formatted to APL files for export.
Client Base-Power:
Bechtel Power Division (Gaithersburg) has been using ASD's software for several years. An extensive evaluation of ASD's Router verses the competition was completed prior to re-licensing with ASD last March.
Hitachi (Japan) has also used the Router in both fossil and nuclear design applications.
ASD performed "Pilot" projects for Siemen's Fossil and Nuclear Power Divisions in Erlangen Germany.
ASD Solution's = Reduced MH's + Quality Design:
The ASD Pipe Router produces the optimized piping design, based on the advanced application of industry wide engineering knowledge that have been incorporated into alogarithms. The Router automatically considers engineering cost restraints including supportability and stress to select the optimal route on a node by node basis. A consistent design quality is achieved that complies with industry standards and good design practice.
The batch routing sequence is primarily determined by material costs, reducing costly welds and fittings on large diameter and expensive alloy piping. In addition to design the Router automatically generates MTO's, Isometrics and APL files for export to detail 3D CAD systems.
The Router will also afford significant reductions in engineering design efforts and man-hours.
ASD's OPD (Optimized Piping Design) Software:
ASD provides the accepted world leading software for automatic piping system design. The Windows NT version of ASD's OPD software is comprised of:
1. Pipe Router creates a computer generated cost driven 3D piping design based on industry standards.
2. Auto Plant Modeler (APM) creates a 3D model utilizing a standard equipment library. Icons provide parametric equipment types with rule based nozzles.
3. Pipe Support Designer (PSD) software performs stress analysis, support optimization and design. This can be accomplished within ASD or with lines imported from PDS.
In addition ASD provides Engineering Services contracts on-site or out of our New Delhi Office. Engineering project work has been successfully completed for Bechtel, Hitachi and Toyo both in the power and petro-chemical fields.
- Cost/Time Reductions
- Documentation and Retrieval of Intellectual Knowledge
- Efficient transfer and storage of information
- Enterprise Management
Efficient utilization and transfer of information and knowledge within a company is vital to its success. This especially rings true in the Process & Power industry, since the balance between profit and loss is often measured by how well a company can control its operating costs. Lack of control of costs of raw materials have forced companies to develop new ways of controlling other costs; time, knowledge documentation/retrieval, and Enterprise Management.
