Petro-Chemical

Summary:

The majority of total project cost savings is achieved during the early Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) stages of a project. In a highly competitive lump sum market, the Router provides the means to quickly evaluate alternative arrangements. The Router provides MTO accuracy within 5% and a quality, interference-free 3D piping design that includes stress and support considerations.

The Router is a proven marketing tool that promotes early client confidence. Eighty percent of the major international firms as well as several owners are using ASD's Knowledge Based Engineering Software to produce computer generated conceptual and preliminary design where the majority of total project cost savings is achieved. This approach greatly reduces man-hours and eliminates much of the "throw-away" engineering existing in the industry today. This design is exported to their in-house 3D systems for detail design, eliminating much of the "throw-away" engineering existing in the industry today.

Industry Advantage:

The majority of total project cost savings is achieved during the early Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) stage of a project. The ASD router provides a conceptual 3D design, including space allocation for maintenance. A substantial reduction in man-hours and accurate MTO's allow competitive bids on a greater number of projects with reduced risks.

Most companies are using ASD's Auto Plant Modeler with the Pipe Router to establish the initial plant arrangement and size pipe racks during early design stages. Other companies including Kellogg and Foster Wheeler (UK) utilize their own 3D modeling software to generate 3D equipment. Either way, the Router provides automatic rule based equipment nozzle locations so that conceptual piping design is readily generated.

Man-hour reductions of up to 30% are attainable with the Router, which provides the means to quickly evaluate alternative arrangements to provide the most cost-effective design. Once line input is created and the equipment has been modeled, piping will be automatically routed for any arrangement. The Router is often used for off-site areas as well as within the plant boundary. Large areas are broken into smaller models with "stitching" or splicing automatically interfaced at battery limits.

The Router considers multiple routes before selecting the optimized path. The Router's cost-driven logic, which lowers construction and installation costs by reducing piping quantities, field welds and supports. Automatic batch sequencing of piping is based on size, material and temperature, so that the greatest savings are realized in large diameter alloy piping systems.

Design features inherent to the software conform to industry standards and follow good design practice. Piping is automatically routed along towers (tower "hugging") for supportability. The Router automatically sequence branches off main headers in pipe racks based on the physical arrangement. Rack entry/ exit logic eliminates pockets whenever feasible. A "Nested Loop" command calculates the required expansion loops for rack piping.

In addition Piping Templates have been developed for pump suction and discharge piping which automatically provide required access space and expansion loops if specified. Control Valves can automatically positioned at accessible locations.

The 3D model progresses to Preliminary Design and with minor refinement, a quality interference free design is exported to PDS for Detail Design Current industry trends are to utilize proven Standard or Modular Designs for equipment containing complex piping manifolds. These modules can be imported from previous projects or primitive shapes with approximate interface points. This engineering "re-use" approach is compatible with the Router. In addition to MTO's, piping isometrics are automatically generated.

ASD Solution's = Reduced MH's + Quality Design

The ASD Pipe Router produces the optimized piping design, based on the advanced application of industry wide engineering knowledge that have been incorporated into alogarithms. The Router automatically considers engineering cost restraints including supportability and stress to select the optimal route on a node by node basis. A consistent design quality is achieved that complies with industry standards and good design practice.

The batch routing sequence is primarily determined by material costs, reducing costly welds and fittings on large diameter and expensive alloy piping. In addition to design the Router automatically generates MTO's, Isometrics and APL files for export to detail 3D CAD systems. The Router will also afford significant reductions in engineering design efforts and man-hours.

ASD's OPD (Optimized Piping Design) Software

ASD provides the accepted world leading software for automatic piping system design. The Windows NT version of ASD's OPD software is comprised of:

1. Pipe Router creates a computer generated cost driven 3D piping design based on industry standards.
2. Auto Plant Modeler (APM) creates a 3D model utilizing a standard equipment library. Icons provide parametric equipment types with rule based nozzles.
3. Pipe Support Designer (PSD) software performs stress analysis, support optimization and design. This can be accomplished within ASD or with lines imported from PDS.

In addition ASD provides Engineering Services contracts on-site or out of our New Delhi Office. Engineering project work has been successfully completed for Bechtel, Hitachi and Toyo both in the power and petro-chemical fields.
